Fondouk

Fondouk or also known as Caravanserai, a kind of hotel purposed for traveling merchants. In Fes, one of the oldest cities in Morocco, many fondouks are still exist. One of them located in old Medina, as shown below. Travelers and traders of all places stopped here for rested, on their way to or back from Sahara. While men slept on the top floors, horses and mules rested in the inner courtyard. The bottom floors are set up to conduct trading transaction with variety of goods, such as leather, books, textiles and other goods.

    • Indeed, Mbak Indah.. Animals were staying on the ground while the owners sleeping or going somewhere for transaction. It reminds me of stories about nomadic people that apparently are still exist..
